La excepción confirma la regla y en mi caso, dos excepciones contrastan en mi memoria con el entorno escéptico en el que me crié. La primera es el recuerdo de una tía abuela que curaba los empachos y el mal de ojo por teléfono, usando a su esposo como peón metafísico. La segunda es la mitología católica, cortesía de la escuela Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia en Buenos Aires, completa con las imágenes de santos y santas, tenuemente iluminados, en estados de éxtasis y dolor que decoraban los interminables y siniestros pasillos de aquel edificio. Luego de toda una vida de feroz agnosticismo, creía haber emergido en la adultez firme en mi indiferencia hacia lo místico e irregular. Los cristales, en mi opinión, no sirven para más que para pisar papeles, y los carteles de neón que anuncian lecturas psíquicas solo salpican mis caminatas de color. Podrá el lector comprender, entonces, la crisis que me provocó oírme enunciar la pregunta “¿Querés que te tire las cartas?”

Culpo a mi manía por encontrar narrativas donde no las hay y mi debilidad por composiciones artísticas bien pensadas por destrabar la puerta a lo oculto. Estaba yo buscando relleno para mi agenda en una librería cuando me topé con una exhibición de cartas de tarot. Los paisajes codificados en relieve y tecnicolor, junto con sus símbolos e historias me interpelaron. Vi gente encadenada en sus propios vicios y perspectivas, y mujeres gozando su amistad entre bailes y copas de vino. Vi artesanos puliendo su arte, vi la destrucción de todo lo construido y también la esperanza de quien comienza de cero. Vi toda la experiencia humana en esos 78 arquetipos, y, con la complicidad de una adolescente que carga una prueba de embarazo, compré el mazo.

Me resulta peligroso y a la vez exhilarante desatar cualquier nudo que sostenga la tela de mi personalidad. Temo que el reemplazo o la omisión de hebras aquí o allá movilice procesos que logren deshilachar mi existencia. Por años nutrí mi reputación de pragmática, me jacté de mi desdén ante lo inexplicable. Sentada en el sillón azul de mi departamento, vacilaba compartir o no la compra con mis amigos. Le saqué fotos a algunas cartas y se las envié a varios amigos. Había anticipado una cacofonía de burla y preocupación, me sorprendió recibir un unísono “¡Genial, tirame las cartas!” Esperanzada comuniqué a todos que todavía no, que antes tendría que estudiar.

Marché hacia la biblioteca y saqué varios libros sobre la cartomancia, el tarot, la adivinación y la tradición mística. Ciertas fuentes insistían que el tarot había nacido en el antiguo Egipto, mientras otras indicaban que esos orígenes solo servían para prestar drama al tema. Según un artículo académico las cartas fueron una herramienta manipulada por los masones que buscaban beneficiarse del emergente sistema capitalista una vez pasada la revolución francesa. Escuché también un podcast con dos mujeres que se deleitaban en símbolos y ramas de lo oculto, contando chistes indescifrables sobre la cuarta casa de venus o los nódulos del árbol del Kabala. Algunos libros sermoneaban sobre la importancia de leer y comprender todo lo posible sobre la historia y la simbología de las cartas, y otras fuentes aseguraban que la lectura detallada acabaría con la clarividencia. Abarrotada por tanta información, decidí aceptar y hacer una lectura.

Inspirada por la telebrujería de aquella tía abuela curandera y restringida por la pandemia, hice mi primera lectura por video llamada. Le tiré las cartas a una amiga que por amor a un chico y odio a la nieve, se mudó de Canadá a Uruguay y, una vez comenzada la pandemia, decidió quedarse ahí como pseudoresidente. En su lectura sacamos la carta del diablo, dada vuelta. La imagen muestra a Baphomet, mitad hombre y mitad cabra, y a dos sujetos encadenados, representando obstáculos internos como las adicciones, los vicios y el auto sabotaje que nos dificultan la vida. Dado vuelta, sin embargo, el diablo anuncia la superación de anclajes, miedos y limitaciones que estorban el alcance de lo que uno desea. Mi amiga compartió lo difícil que había resultado la llamada en la que anunció a su familia que no volvería a Canadá y el rechazo que sintió por parte de la comunidad académica al terminar un doctorado sin planes de buscar una carrera escolástica. Habíamos por supuesto ya hablado de todo eso, pero la carta, algo borrosa gracias a la calidad de mi cámara parecía que invitaba más reflexión. Algo grotesca, la imagen de ese ser y sus escoltas encadenados parecieron subrayar su decisión acertada, pero no por eso menos difícil.

Tuve la oportunidad de hacer otra lectura cuando supe que el novio de una amiga le había sido infiel. Llegamos al tarot una vez que habíamos ya aplicado los ritos más comúnmente utilizados para sobrellevar este tipo de traición, entre ellos quemar fotos y suscribiendo a su ex a sitios de ornitología, caridades, y negocios de velas, optando por recibir cada última noticia y oferta. Cuando ya había menos furia y más espacio para la reflexión, las cartas ofrecieron el nueve de bastos y la templanza. La primera carta muestra un hombre cansado, apoyado sobre un basto, su cabeza vendada, rodeado de otros ocho, simbolizando fuerza interior, dignidad y valentía frente a situaciones difíciles. La templanza muestra un ángel andrógeno vertiendo agua entre dos copas e invita a estabilizar el balance y devolver orden a la vida. Los rectángulos de cartón dieron lugar a una larga conversación, durante la cual ella se reconoció mucho más resistente y capaz de establecer harmonía de lo que había creído.

Una vez descubierto el mecanismo a través del cual barajar se transmuta en una conversación completa con narrativa y catarsis, comencé a hacer más lecturas. El dos de bastos sirvió para catalizar un diálogo con mi hermano sobre su decisión de estudiar filosofía a pesar de ser ingeniero. Mi padre, enajenado de su hiperactividad por la pandemia, sacó el hombre colgado, una invitación a suspenderse y aceptar esa inversión. Un amigo recibió una advertencia en la carta del ermitaño dada vuelta. Otro se vio alentado en la búsqueda de sus raíces hebreas por la carta de la sacerdotisa. Mi técnica no es refinada; no prendo velas ni extiendo manteles psicodélicos. De hecho, ni siquiera he memorizado todas las cartas, por lo que mis lecturas se ven puntuadas por el ruido de las páginas mientras busco el significado de cada una en el pequeño libro blanco. No uso el mazo con fines divinatorios: no puedo predecir el nombre de tu primogénito, ni el color de ojos de ningún galán. Si tuviera que montar negocio, moriría de hambre.

Si bien mi encuentro con el tarot no abrió las puertas hacia el misticismo, la dejó entreabierta a las infinitas posibles combinaciones que invitan la consideración de elementos previamente ignorados. Lejos de la fe ciega que demandaban aquellos santos en Misericordia, o del compromiso que implicaban los rituales de mi tía abuela, con el tarot la obligación es mínima, y siempre se puede barajar de nuevo.

The exception proves the rule, and in my case, two exceptions stand out in my memory against the firmly skeptical environment in which I was raised. The first is the memory of a great-aunt who cured the evil eye and indigestion over the phone, using her husband as a metaphysical pawn of sorts. Second is Catholic mythology, courtesy of my elementary school in Buenos Aires, Nuestra Señora de la Misericordia, whose hallways were replete with faintly illuminated images of saints in varying states of ecstasy and suffering. After a lifetime of fierce agnosticism, I thought I had emerged into adulthood steadfast in my indifference toward the mystical and irregular. Crystals made great paperweights, and neon signs advertising psychic readings served to add splashes of color to my walks. The reader may understand, then, the crisis I experienced when I heard myself ask, "Do you want me to read your cards?"

I blame my habit of finding narratives where they don’t exist and my weakness for well-thought-out artistic compositions for unlocking the door to the occult. I was looking for a refill for my agenda at a bookstore when I came across a tarot card display. The encoded technicolor landscapes and their symbols and stories spoke to me. I saw people chained by their own vices and perspectives, and women enjoying friendship between dances and glasses of wine. I saw artisans honing their craft, the destruction of everything built, and the hope of starting anew. I saw the entire human experience in 78 archetypes, and, with the guilt of a teenager holding a pregnancy test, I bought the deck.

It feels both dangerous and exhilarating to untie any knot holding my personality together. I fear that replacing or omitting strands here or there might trigger processes that unravel my existence. For years I cultivated a reputation for pragmatism, boasting of my disdain for the inexplicable. Sitting on the blue couch in my apartment, I hesitated to share my purchase with my friends. After some deliberation, I took photos of some cards and sent them to several friends. I had anticipated a cacophony of mockery and concern; I was surprised to receive a unanimous "Cool, read my cards!" I told them not yet—I would need to study first.

I headed to the library and checked out several books on cartomancy, tarot, divination, and mystical traditions. Some sources insisted that tarot originated in ancient Egypt, while others claimed these origins were just to add drama to the subject. According to an academic article, the cards were a tool manipulated by Freemasons seeking to profit from the emerging capitalist system after the French Revolution. I also listened to a podcast featuring two women delighting in symbols and branches of the occult, making indecipherable jokes about Venus’s fourth house or the nodes of the Kabbalah tree of life. Some books preached the importance of thoroughly reading and understanding the history and symbolism of the cards, while other sources argued that the obsession with detailed reading would mean the end of clairvoyance. Overwhelmed I decided to do just try doing a reading.

Inspired by my great-aunt’s tele-witchcraft and restricted by the pandemic, I did my first reading over a video call. I read the cards for a friend who, out of love for a boy and hatred for snow, moved from Canada to Uruguay and, once the pandemic began, decided to stay there as a pseudo-resident. In her reading, we drew the reversed Devil card. The image shows Baphomet, half-man, half-goat, and two chained figures representing internal obstacles like addictions, vices, and self-sabotage that complicate life. Reversed, however, the Devil announces the overcoming of fears and limitations that hinder achieving one’s desires. My friend shared how hard it had been to call her family to tell them she wouldn’t return to Canada and the rejection she felt from the academic community after completing a Ph.D. without plans to pursue an academic career. We had, of course, already talked about all this, but the card, blurry due to my camera quality, seemed to invite further reflection. The grotesque image of that being and its chained companions seemed to underline that her decision was right, though no less difficult.

I had another chance to do a reading when I learned that a friend’s boyfriend had been unfaithful. We turned to the tarot after exhausting the more commonly used rituals for handling such betrayal, including burning photos and subscribing her ex to numerous home décor and candle businesses, opting to receive every last newsletter and offer. Once the fury subsided and left room for reflection, the cards revealed the Nine of Wands and Temperance. The first card shows a weary man leaning on a wand, his head bandaged, surrounded by eight others, symbolizing inner strength, dignity, and bravery in difficult situations. Temperance shows an androgynous angel pouring water between two cups, inviting balance and order to life. The images led to a long conversation, during which she realized she was far more resilient and capable of establishing harmony than she had believed.

Once I discovered the mechanism by which shuffling turns into a conversation, complete with narrative and catharsis, I began doing more readings. The Two of Wands catalyzed a dialogue with my brother about his decision to study philosophy despite being an engineer. My father, alienated by the pandemic from his hyperactivity, drew the Hanged Man, an invitation to suspend and accept that inversion. A friend received a warning about his anti-social habits from the reversed Hermit card. Another was encouraged in his search for his religious roots by the High Priestess card. My technique is unrefined; I don’t light candles or lay out psychedelic cloths. In fact, I haven’t even memorized all 78 cards, so my readings are punctuated by the sound of flipping pages as I look up each meaning in the little white book. I don’t use the deck for divinatory purposes: I can’t predict your firstborn’s name or the eye color of a mysterious romantic arrival. If I had to make a living off of this, I’d starve.

While my encounter with tarot didn’t fling open the doors to mysticism, it did leave them ajar to the infinite possible combinations that invite consideration of previously ignored elements. Far from the blind faith demanded by those saints at Misericordia, or the commitment implied by my great-aunt’s rituals, tarot’s obligation is minimal, and you can always shuffle again.
