Adventures in downsizing and reselling

After much deliberation and the realization that purchasing a home in Toronto is out of reach, Gyan and I decide to downsize the contents of two two-bedroom apartments into one one-bedroom apartment. I prepare for this by researching “minimalism”, “decluttering”, “downsizing”, “Swedish death cleaning”, “Feng Shui”, “Buddhism”, and the odd mommy blogger. Gyan offers to declutter the dog and her bowls, I decline.

Scanning the room, I pretend I don’t see my puzzle collection and decide instead to focus on a dusty copy of the strategy game Settlers of Catan. I carefully take a photo of the box, and list the game at half its original prize. The second the advertisement is up, I realize I have made a terrible mistake. A torrent of potential buyers contact me and my Marketplace inbox becomes impossible to keep up with:

“I can’t believe you have this game, I have been looking for it for forever!”

“Oh dear god you have this game?”

“Is this in mint condition?”

The corners of my mouth slant down slightly and I squint as I pick up the red and yellow box. I inspect it more carefully than before, and input its exact name into various search engines. I confirm that the game is neither out of edition nor out of stock. I place a copy of it in my cart and establish that I could indeed replace the game tomorrow should I feel seller’s remorse.

The time spent attempting to understand the frenzy has only catalyzed the inbox flooding. I click on a name at random to stop the endless downward stream of message notifications and agree to meet up with a nice albeit entirely too enthusiastic sounding woman. “Are you able to meet me at the subway stop?” She asks. I’m supposed to meet up with my brother, but in the time that it takes me to ask him whether he wants to go for a walk and drop off the game, she changes her mind: “Never mind, I will come pick it up, I don’t want it to go to someone else.” I double check the contents of the box and let other interested buyers know the game is spoken for. My news is met with a few polite thanks, several crying emojis, and messages of outright disappointment.

I head down the elevator as the agreed upon sale time approaches. A message comes through, the buyer will be taking a city bike straight from the subway entrance. It’s faster that way, she says. I confirm for the third time the availability of the game and shrug. I see a woman approach the entrance of the condominium complex, dismount her bike, and run towards me. I hesitantly shuffle towards her in an attempt to lessen her distance and ease her stress, now bordering on panic.

“Oh my god I made it” she exhales.

I press my lips together in an attempt to hide my curiosity, failing almost immediately: “So, I’m happy to to be selling this, but you know the game is available pretty much everywhere, right?”

“Oh yes, but this one is in pristine condition, it’s great”, she says, contouring the shaggy corners of the cardboard box with her fingers.

“You know the game is available everywhere, new, right?” I try again.

She’s not listening, swaddling the cardboard box into her backpack, careful not to nick or pinch any of its edges. She looks up, triumphant and informs me she has sent an e-transfer. I nod, thank her, and make a conscious effort to conceal any facial twitches.

Back in my apartment, I lower myself onto a chair and pat Natto’s head. The evening light filters through the curtains and reflects off a set of hand blown shot glasses. I walk towards them and hold one up. Natto has followed me in protest, and I feel her paw swatting at my calf, demanding that the patting resume. There is a tiny amethyst bird at the center of the glass, seamlessly blended into the vessel. I calculate their use over the past two years and reach for my phone. I open up the Marketplace application and pause as tiny colourful birds glimmering in their crystal cages stare at me. I put my phone down, carefully place them inside a small shoe box and head to the elevator. I sit the box on the lobby coffee table and balance on the glasses a messy yet legible note: “Free, please take.”

Después de mucho deliberar, llegamos con Gyan a la conclusión que un departamento en Toronto está más allá de nuestro presupuesto. Con el fin de ahorrar dinero decidimos reducir el contenido de dos departamentos de dos habitaciones a un departamento de una habitación. Intento inspirarme investigando sobre el "minimalismo", "decluttering", "downsizing", "Dostadning” (el concepto sueco de limpiar antes de la muerte), "feng shui", "budismo" y la sabiduría de alguna que otra mamá bloguera. Gyan propone que regalemos al perro y sus bols para despejar espacio, yo le digo que no.

Escaneo el comedor, fingiendo no ver mi colección de rompecabezas y decido enfocarme en una copia olvidada del juego de estrategia Settlers of Catan. Tomo cuidadosamente una foto de la caja y pongo el juego a la venta a mitad del precio original. Ni bien subo el anuncio, presiento haber cometido un terrible error. Una avalancha de personas interesadas me contacta y mi bandeja de entrada de Marketplace comienza a hincharse:

—No puedo creer que tengas este juego, ¡hace siglos que lo busco!

—Ay Dios mío, ¿sigue disponible?

—¿Está nuevo, no?

Aprieto levemente los labios y entrecierro los ojos, levantando la caja roja y amarilla. La inspecciono nuevamente e ingreso su nombre exacto en varios buscadores. Confirmo que el juego no está fuera de edición ni agotado. Pongo una copia en mi carrito de compras y establezco que podría reemplazar el juego mañana si llegara a arrepentirme de la venta.

El tiempo dedicado a intentar entender la frenesí solo cataliza la inundación de mensajes en mi bandeja de entrada. Hago clic en un nombre al azar con la ilusión de detener el flujo interminable de notificaciones de mensajes y acuerdo reunirme con una mujer agradable aunque demasiado entusiasta.

—¿Podrías encontrarte conmigo en la parada del subte? —pregunta ella. 

Había quedado en encontrarme con mi hermano, pero en el tiempo que me toma preguntarle si quiere ir a dejar el juego conmigo, la mujer cambia de opinión: 

—No importa, voy yo hasta allá a buscarlo, no quiero que se lo lleve otro.

Reviso el contenido de la caja y les informo a otros compradores interesados que el juego ya está reservado. Mi noticia desencadena algunos agradecimientos educados, varios emojis de llanto y mensajes de despechada desilusión.

Se acerca la hora acordada para la venta, bajo en el ascensor. Llega un mensaje anunciando que la compradora ha alquilado una bicicleta pública, que enseguida llega de la boca del subte. Según ella, así es más rápido. Confirmo por tercera vez la disponibilidad del juego y me encojo de hombros. Veo que una mujer se acerca a la entrada del edificio, se baja de su bicicleta y comienza a correr hacia mí. Me acerco a ella con cautela, intentando acortar la distancia y aliviar su estrés que comienza a redondear el pánico.

—Ay, Dios mío, llegué —exhala ella.

Contorsiono mis labios intentando disimular mi curiosidad pero fallo casi inmediatamente.

—Mirá, no es que no esté contenta de vender esto, pero sabés que el juego se encuentra por cualquier lado, ¿no?

—Sí sí, pero éste está en perfectas condiciones —dice ella, siguiendo las esquinas desgastadas del cartón con sus dedos

—Pero, en cualquier lado lo conseguís nuevo, ¿no? —intento de nuevo

Ella no escucha y mete la caja de cartón en su mochila, cuidando de no rasgar o pellizcar ninguna de sus esquinas. Levanta la vista, triunfante, y me informa que ha enviado una transferencia electrónica. Asiento, le agradezco e intento ocultar cualquier tic facial.

De vuelta en mi departamento, me siento en una silla y acaricio la cabeza de Natto. La luz de la tarde se filtra a través de las cortinas y se refleja en un juego de vasos de shot hechos a mano. Me acerco a ellos y sostengo uno. Natto protesta el hecho que las caricias han cesado, y me da varios golpes con su pata, exigiendo que resuma. Hay un pequeño pájaro esmeralda en el centro del vaso, perfectamente integrado al recipiente. Calculo el uso que han recibido en los últimos dos años y agarro mi teléfono. Abro la aplicación de Marketplace y me detengo mientras pequeños pájaros coloridos me miran, brillando en sus jaulas de cristal. Dejo el teléfono, los coloco cuidadosamente dentro de una pequeña caja de zapatos y me dirijo al ascensor. Pongo la caja en la mesa de café del vestíbulo y poso sobre los vasos un garabato apenas legible: "Gratis, por favor llévenselos".
