A war, imperceptible but for a sudden change of tension in the air, has been declared.

It starts when the Controller catches the Compliance Officer’s pen dangling approximately 2.5 cm off the Compliance Officer’s desk. The Controller doesn’t much care for the Compliance Officer —he wears indecent, colourful sneakers to work and has reported a “smell sensitivity”, whatever that means, causing posters with perfume bottles to be plastered all over the office and common areas. In any case, the Controller squints at the pen and frowns, sure that its unfortunate, improper position is an oversight on the Compliance Officer’s behalf. Muttering under his breath about the effectiveness of a Compliance Officer who cannot make pens comply, he walks to the desk and, with the excuse of inquiring about a line on the general ledger, pushes the pen in 2.8 cm towards the center of the desk. Satisfied, he returns to his desk.

As usual, the next morning the Controller is first to the office. He flicks on the lights and spots the pen, which is back to dangling, this time 2.9 cm off the desk. The Controller is aghast. In three paces he crosses the office floor again to push the pen back onto the desk, the force of his finger abandoning all pretence and firmly placing the pen in the middle third of the desk —nowhere near the edge.

The day advances, and during the weekly meeting, the Controller’s spirits are lifted by the analysis of the minutiae of the new fiscal year’s budget. His colleagues look as though they’ve been poured into their seats, held to the polyester fabric as by despair and centrifugal force. Satisfied with a morning well spent, the Controller makes his way back to the office. While changing into his running shoes for his daily lunch walk, he sees it again —the pen. Back to dangling, back to 2.5 cm off the edge of the desk. The office starts to fill up; he cannot risk exposure by fixing the offending stationary. He finishes tying his shoes with a perfect double knot and exits towards the trails.

He ignores the autumn reds and ochres, dismisses the cool breeze accompanying a warm October sun. Staring at his shoes he mutters about insubordination and appropriate office decorum. After arriving at his midway stump, exactly 20 minutes from the office, he circles it and heads back triumphant: he has hatched a plan.

The next morning the Controller is prepared. He bides his time until the Compliance Officer’s 10 AM yogurt break, an indulgent waste of time. When the time comes, the Compliance Officer peels back the aluminium foil lid. Strawberry, a ridiculous flavour for an adult man, the Controller thinks. Out of his briefcase, the Controller slips out a bag. Out of that bag, he pulls out a second, transparent bag containing two hard-boiled eggs, peeled, smooth. Carefully wrapping his hands in a paper napkin, he extracts the first egg and makes his way to the officer’s desk.

The Controller informs the Compliance Officer that an invoice from a main supplier is unclear, then takes a bite out of the smooth, shiny egg. He points to the offending line on the white paper, insisting that item 18 needs further detail, and takes another bite of egg. A single crumb, composed of white and mustard yellow falls from the Controller’s mouth and lands on item 18, underscoring the need for revision. The air is thick with the smell of sulfur, and wafts into the Compliance Officer’s nose. Satisfied, the controller observes the tell-tale lip curl of disgust flash on the Compliance Officer’s face. For good measure, he reaches into the bag for his second egg. Overwhelmed, the Compliance Officer puts down a half-eaten cup of bright pink yogurt, his face now a pale shade of green-gray.

The controller declares himself satisfied with the changes made to line item 18, finishes his second egg, burps the bag, and tucks in the green-gray officer’s pen with a shove of his index finger.

“It could fall and cause an accident, you know.”

Comienza cuando el Contador nota la lapicera del Oficial de Cumplimiento colgando aproximadamente 2,5 cm fuera de los parámetros del escritorio. Al Contador no le cae bien el Oficial de Cumplimiento —se pone zapatillas indecentes para el trabajo y reportó una “sensibilidad olfativa”, hecho que culminó en pósters con botellas de perfume por la oficina y áreas comunes. El Contador entrecierra los ojos al ver la lapicera y frunce el ceño, inquieto por el descuido del Oficial de Cumplimiento. Murmurando entre dientes sobre la eficacia de un Oficial de Cumplimiento que no hace cumplir a las lapiceras, se acerca al escritorio y, con la excusa de preguntar por una línea en una factura, empuja la lapicera 2,8 cm hacia el centro del escritorio. Satisfecho, vuelve a su escritorio.

Como de costumbre, al día siguiente el Contador llega primero a la oficina. Enciende las luces y ve la lapicera de nuevo, colgando, esta vez a 2,9 cm del borde del escritorio. Se queda atónito. En tres pasos cruza la oficina y empuja la lapicera de vuelta al escritorio, abandonando cualquier pretensión y colocándola firmemente en el tercio central del escritorio —lejos del borde.

La mañana avanza. Durante la reunión semanal, el Contador mejora de humor al analizar en minucioso detalle el presupuesto del nuevo año fiscal. Sus colegas quedan derretidos en sus asientos, pegados a la tela de poliéster por la desesperación y como si por fuerza centrífuga. Satisfecho con una mañana bien aprovechada, el Contador vuelve a la oficina. Mientras se cambia los zapatos para su caminata diaria, la ve de nuevo —la lapicera. De vuelta colgando, de vuelta a 2,5 cm del borde del escritorio. La oficina empieza a llenarse; no puede exponerse. Termina de atarse los cordones con un doble nudo perfecto y sale hacia los senderos.

El Contador ignora los rojos y ocres otoñales, desestima la brisa fresca que acompaña un cálido sol de octubre. Mirando las zapatillas, murmura sobre insubordinación y decorum en la oficina. Al llegar al árbol de siempre, exactamente a 20 minutos de la oficina, lo rodea y emprende regreso triunfante: ha ideado un plan.

La mañana siguiente, el Contador está preparado. Espera hasta el recreo de yogur de las 10 AM del Oficial de Cumplimiento --un indulgente desperdicio de tiempo. Cuando llega el momento, el Oficial de Cumplimiento despega el disco de aluminio. De frutilla encima, sabor ridículo para un hombre adulto, piensa el Contador. De su maletín, el Contador saca una bolsa. De esa bolsa, saca otra bolsa transparente que contiene dos huevos duros, pelados, lisos. Envolviendo cuidadosamente sus manos en una servilleta de papel, saca el primer huevo y se dirige al escritorio del oficial.

El Contador informa al Oficial de Cumplimiento que la última factura de un proveedor principal no está clara, y luego da un mordisco al huevo liso y reluciente. Señala la línea ofensiva en el papel blanco, insistiendo en que el ítem 18 necesita más detalle, y da otro mordisco al huevo. Una sola miga, compuesta de blanco y amarillo mostaza, cae de la boca del Contador y aterriza en el ítem 18, subrayando la necesidad de revisión. El aire espesa con olor a azufre, y llega a la nariz del Oficial de Cumplimiento. Satisfecho, el contador observa el asco que cruza el rostro del Oficial de Cumplimiento. Sin ganas de quedarse con la duda, el Contador mete la mano en la bolsa en busca del segundo huevo. Abrumado, el Oficial de Cumplimiento deja su yogur a medio comer, de un rosa brillante, con la cara ahora de un tono gris verdoso.

El Contador declara su satisfacción o con los cambios en el ítem 18, termina el segundo huevo, cierra la bolsa y acomoda la lapicera del Oficial Verdoso con un empujón del dedo índice.
