A few days ago Gyan and I were crossing the University of Toronto campus on our way to tango class. As we approached the heart of Queen’s Park, I was distracted by the gravity-defying tricks of a group of skateboarders. The five, maybe six teenagers were sliding along edges, slapping their boards against the concrete seating zone encircling the statue of King Edward VII. The skateboards functioned as extensions of their owners, and the spectacle demanded attention, so we paused to watch.

A skateboarder in a backwards cap seemed to be the most ambitious of the group. He landed the most complicated-looking jumps, and bounced off the pavement with the ease of a rubber ball. After gathering speed sliding along the base of the monument, he lifted off the ground. He took a little too much flight, losing connection with his board. At the top of his jump, he grabbed for his skateboard, his finger tips narrowly missing it. After what seemed like several moments, he landed with a great crash; his board had beat him to the ground and rolled away a few seconds earlier. The smacking sound of the board followed by the groaning of Backwards Cap served as a siren, because in the time it took me to spot his skateboard, he was already surrounded by his friends:

“Oh shit man, you okay?”

“Aaaaghhhh I’m not okay, I’m not okay!”

“That looked brutal!”

“Your foot alright?”

Moved by the display of friendship, I watched as one of the boys split from the group to fetch Backwards Cap’s skateboard. It was only as he turned to walk back towards his injured friend that I saw a neon-pink cast enveloping his forearm. Neon-Pink Cast was making a valiant effort to carry both his own board and his friend’s. The board wedged beneath his pink-coated arm, however, was in too precarious a grip and Neon-Pink Cast kept tripping and hobbling, seriously jeopardizing injury of of one of his remaining limbs.

The sight of Backwards Cap grabbing his ankle while Neon-Pink Cast attempted to execute damage control proved too much for me, I broke down into a fit of laughter. As I was being ushered away by an unimpressed Gyan, I tried looking back to apologize between giggles, but Gyan said to leave it alone, that I was making it worse.

I’ve never skateboarded nor been in a cast. That said, I’ve been lucky enough to have lived countless moments of a similar ethos with my own friends. I remembered the time my friend Vanessa accidentally ripped through the three-punched holes in one of the pages of her brand-new Italian textbook. I’ve never managed to keep a book looking new past its day of purchase, but Vanessa keeps books (and all other things, really), in pristine condition. In my enthusiasm to offer Vanessa a replacement for her torn page, I ripped my own page out of the binder, turning the exchange into a zero-sum game. The look of absolute horror on Vanessa’s face before my ability to turn one ruined vocabulary page into two sent me into a fit of laughter out of which I only snapped when Professoressa arrived to the classroom.

Professoressa, a woman from Central Italy with impeccable taste in footwear, had graciously allowed Vanessa and I to audit the class for free. As a graduate student who practiced conjugation while my sheets dried at the local laundromat, I had opted for a second-hand textbook which meant no access to the ritzy online learning portal.

As Professoressa made her way through the names, double checking access to the online portal, I learned over and whispered to Vanessa:

“Shit, I hope she doesn’t mind that I don’t have access, I don’t want to draw attention to myself, she’s already letting us sit in.”

“Don’t worry, you won’t.” she whispered back.

“Huh?”

“She won’t notice, I signed us up.”

“Us?” I smiled at Vanessa, who, like her Portuguese last name indicated, could be as sweet as honey when she wanted.

I looked up in time to see Professoressa squint at her list of names, and then frown. She brought it closer to her face, fixed her glasses, contrasted the list with that on her computer, looked back up and said:

“I…this name…is there a Vilén Cruelo in the class? Vilén Cruelo?”

I snorted and attempted to cover my mouth as I looked over to Vanessa. Redder than the last third of the Italian flag, she poked up a finger. The entire class had turned to look at us.

“I uh…combined our names, we’re sharing the account.”

Professoressa shrugged, “Suit yourselves, you’re auditors.”

“Yeah, no attention drawn,” I chortled, wiping away a tear.

“Shut up, I was trying to be helpful.”

“So was I,” I waved the ripped up page.

So was Neon-Pink Cast, I guess.

Gyan y yo estábamos cruzando el campus de la Universidad de Toronto camino a una milonga cuando me distrajeron los saltos anti-gravedad de un grupo de skaters en el corazón de Queen’s Park. Eran cinco, tal vez seis adolescentes, deslizándose por los bordes y golpeando sus skates contra los asientos de cemento que rodean la estatua de Eduardo VII. Las patinetas parecían extensiones de sus dueños; el espectáculo exigía atención, por lo que nos detuvimos a mirar.

Un skater con una gorra al revés parecía ser el más ambicioso del grupo. Aterrizaba saltos inverosímiles y rebotaba del pavimento como si las ruedas de la patineta fueran pelotas de goma. Luego de tomar coraje, aumentó su velocidad deslizándose por la base del monumento, y despegó. Voló, más y más alto, hasta perder contacto con su skate. En el clímax de su salto intentó agarrarlo, pero apenas logró rozarlo con los dedos. Después de una eternidad, cayó con un golpe fuertísimo, su skate había caído varios segundos antes. El sonido de la patineta golpeando el piso seguido del grito de Gorra al Revés sirvió como alarma, porque en el tiempo que me tomó localizar su patineta, él ya estaba rodeado por sus amigos:

—Uhhhh, ¿estás bien?

—¡Aaaaghhh no estoy bien, no estoy bien!

—¡Boludo, te mataste!

—¿Cómo tenés el pie?

Conmovida por la escena de amistad, vi cómo uno de los chicos se separaba del grupo para buscar la patineta de Gorra al Revés. Fue solo cuando el buen samaritano emprendió el regreso hacia su amigo herido que noté un yeso de un rosa furioso cubriéndole el antebrazo. Rosa Furioso estaba haciendo un esfuerzo impresionante para llevar tanto su patineta como la de su amigo, pero la tabla que llevaba bajo su brazo enyesado colgaba de manera precaria, haciendo que Rosa Furioso tropezara y rengueara, poniendo seriamente en peligro lo que le quedaba de integridad física.

La escena de Gorra al Revés agarrándose el tobillo mientras Rosa Furioso empeoraba la situación intentando ayudar fue demasiado para mí. Me largué a reír a carcajadas. Mientras Gyan, algo mortificado, me sacaba de ahí, quise disculparme entre risas, pero él me dijo que lo dejara, que también yo estaba empeorando la cosa.

Aunque nunca anduve en patineta ni estuve enyesada, he tenido la suerte de compartir momentos similares con mis amigos. Me acordé de cuando Vanessa accidentalmente rajó las tres perforaciones de una página de su flamante manual de italiano. Yo nunca logro mantener un libro en buen estado más allá de la compra, pero Vanessa mantiene los libros (y todo lo demás, en realidad) en perfecto estado. Con mucho entusiasmo por ofrecerle a Vanessa un repuesto, rajé sin querer mi página, convirtiéndo el intercambio en una empresa inútil. La cara de horror absoluto de Vanessa ante mi habilidad para convertir una página arruinada en dos me descompuso de la risa, y solo logré calmarme cuando llegó la Professoressa al aula.

La Professoressa, una mujer del centro de Italia con un gusto impecable para el calzado, nos había amablemente permitido a Vanessa y a mí asistir a la clase gratis como oyentes. Como estudiante de posgrado que repasaba conjugaciones mientras secaba las sábanas en la lavandería de barrio, había optado por un libro de segunda mano, lo que significaba no tener acceso al lujoso portal de aprendizaje en línea.

Cuando la Professoressa empezó a pasar lista, chequeando el acceso a dicho portal, me incliné y le susurré a Vanessa:

—Uy, espero que no le moleste que no haya comprado el acceso. Encima de que nos deja aprender gratis…no quiero llamar la atención.

—No te preocupes, no va a pasar nada.

—¿Eh?

—No se va a dar cuenta, nos anoté.

—¿Nos? —le sonreí a Vanessa, que, como su apellido portugués indica, si está de buen humor, puede ser dulce como la miel.

Levanté la mirada justo a tiempo para ver cómo la Professoressa entrecerraba los ojos al mirar la lista de nombres, y luego fruncía el ceño. Acercó la lista a su cara, ajustó los lentes, contrastó la lista con la que tenía en la computadora, miró hacia arriba y dijo:

—Y… este nombre… ¿Hay una Vilén Cruelo en la clase? ¿Vilén Cruelo?

Más roja que la última franja de la bandera italiana, levantó tímidamente un dedo. Toda la clase nos estaba mirando.

—Eh… combiné nuestros nombres, estamos compartiendo la cuenta.

La Professoressa se encogió de hombros 

—Como quieran ustedes, son oyentes.

—Menos mal que no llamaste la atención —dije, secando una lágrima.

—Callate, yo estaba tratando de dar una mano.

—Yo también —dije, agitando la página rota.

Supongo que Rosa Furioso también.
